Also known as oral contraceptives, birth control pills are highly effective medications that prevent pregnancy.

There are two main types of birth control pills: one with estrogen and progestin and one with just progestin.

The two main ways they prevent pregnancy are: 1.) The hormones thicken the cervical mucous, which keeps sperm from entering the uterus on their way to the egg. 2.) By maintaining a level of hormone in the blood stream that prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs.

WARNING: Birth control does not offer protection against STD or HIV. Women who use oral contraceptives are advised not to smoke due to an increased risk of serious cardiovascular adverse effects.

Negative pregnancy test required to start a birth control regimen.

Emergency contraception pills are used to prevent pregnancy and are sometimes referred to as Plan B or the morning after pill.

Emergency contraception (Plan B) is most effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

We can prescribe emergency contraception for women age 18 years and older. It shouldn’t be used as a regular form of birth control, and it won’t terminate or negatively affect an existing pregnancy.
